The Cool Feedback, meet some musical adventurers!

Here's one of the most unique and creative musical adventures on the scene: the Cool Feedback! United around guitarist Grégoire Garrigues, with the help of incredible musicians such as Robert Lloyd, Gilbert Artman, Jac Berrocal and Laurent Lanouzière, this original gathering plays music that's hard to define, that borrows as much from rock as from jazz, including improvisation galore. It's a new way of looking at music, and a new way of touching our souls. The band has called its albums “Soul Overdrive”, “Dash my Mind” and “Free Spirit”. A trilogy of albums featuring cover sleeve photos by Rico Parois, who can be considered a member of the collective and whose theme is modern architecture!

That's what the Cool Feedback is all about: a group that has built itself around a central axis but knows how to spread over musically so as to speak to you more clearly. You only have to see one of their concerts to realise that! Let's meet a group which has found its niche by accepting no dictates, no chapels whatsoever… Just a collective of free musicians!

Now that the group has released its third album, Free Spirit, some of the musicians answered a few questions for you to find out more!

How and when was the band born?

Grégoire Garrigues: Before even thinking about a band, Robert Lloyd, Sonny Sharrock and I were in Bill Laswell's studio in New York in 1993 to record an album and we improvised a 10-minute piece of feedback with a view to incorporate it into a track. The result was so beautiful that it became a track in its own right, and was titled 'Tribute to Sun Ra'.

The group came together somewhat by chance in 1997 when recording tracks that would be released 9 years later. I started off recording feedback on guitar and bass on my own, then I asked Iann Assuied to play drums on 2 tracks, Michel Guikovaty to compose piano parts for another one and Robert Lloyd came to play on 'Catalyst on the List'. As a result: The Cool Feedback Quartet was born and an album 'Dash My Mind' was released in 2016 thanks to Thierry Los / 3 Jeunes Tambours !

What have you been up to since then?

GG: Only a few concerts, a live album and 2 other studio albums, so 4 albums, which is no mean feat!

How would you describe the Feedback technique?

GG: Feedback is pretty simple to explain: take an electric guitar, the sound of the instrument comes out of an amp, this sound is picked up by the instrument's microphone and this forms a sound loop that can last as long as you like.

And why feedback specifically?

Robert Lloyd: I've always been spellbound by and in love with the Pibroch music of the Scottish Highlands (long solo bagpipe improvisations, very similar to Indian ragas). Somehow I knew I had to get into 'that world'. I was very fond of Pete Townshend's experiments, which nowadays would be described as 'noisy', in his inspired heyday, but it wasn't until I saw Jeff Beck, equipped with a Telecaster and a Vox AC30 amp in June '65, immersed in feedback, that the revelation, like Claudel at Notre-Dame, overwhelmed me: THAT'S WHO I AM AND WHERE I WANT TO GO! It was as if Viviane and Merlin took me by the hand and said: 'we're with you, you are one of us, go for it, this is your duty'.

GG: Feedback is really unique, it's a bit like continuous breathing applied to the guitar. Contrary to what you might think, you don't have to play loud to get feedback, but when there's volume, it's a unique pleasure to feel everything vibrating, the air, the amps, your body, everything around you, it goes completely crazy! You just have to see Jimi Hendrix in action, for example.

What is today's line up?

GG: Since the first concert in June 2018 there has been Robert Lloyd-guitar, Jean-Bernard Lepape-drums, Gilbert Artman-bass clarinet and drums, Jac Berrocal-trumpet, Morgan Lanoë-bass and over the course of the other concerts Laurent Lanouzière-bass, José Ortuno-guitar, Tullia Morand-saxophone, Pierre Mimran-saxophone, Didier Léglise-synthesizer and Vincent Chavagnac-saxophone. The new album features Jérôme Pons-piano, but he hasn't played live with us yet.

Grégoire, I know that Laurent and Jean-Bernard have been playing rock with you for a long time, but Tullia, Pierre, Gilbert and Jac, who come from other musical backgrounds, how did you end up playing in this group?

Tullia Moran and Pierre Mimran: Grégoire is first and foremost a friend. He's open-minded about his style of music, he comes from rock and he's curious to discover and integrate other musical worlds. He invited us to take part in the recording of 2 Cool Feedback albums and we were really taken with the idea. It was a great experience for us, a human and a musical one!

Gilbert Artman: Robert and I have known each other for a long time, and we used to go to the same venues and concerts. From time to time, we'd meet up at the end of the evening at the Lloyd's, where the welcome was very warm, and the discotheque full of little gems and discoveries for me. It was also a place where Philippe Bone and Gilles Yéprémian were preparing actions and concerts with bands such as Half Human Band, Ricky Darling and others.

It was undoubtedly during one of these preparatory meetings for the Noisysson-Sec festival that Patrick Eudeline and the proto Asphalt Jungle, later joined by Grégoire Garrigues, first came together.

It was only too logical – after the very fine Robert Lloyd album - that surrounded by relentless noisy groovers, with the palette augmented by a pair of saxophonists bringing other colours and adding extra space, I joined the group at their invitation.

I'd like to thank them for their willingness to welcome us to this adventure with Jac from time to time, and to share our eternal thwarted well-being.

Jac Berrocal: We ended up playing together because the 4 of us know each other, along with Gilbert and Robert, but we don't really come from different worlds - I listen to music from the Middle Ages to the hardest metal!

And Grégoire has a lot of experience in common with me, particularly through Vince Taylor and Bobbie Clarke.

Is it a group or a collective?

Laurent Lanouzière: The Cool Feedback is a collective and a group whose line up is liable to change, where each member brings his own sensitivity, his own stone to the building. In concerts, we sculpt this same stone as if we were cutting the facets of a precious stone to make it sparkle, properly calibrated and unique. To find its essence.

It's all about nuances, suspended moments, listening, where one is standing, the silence and the noise, the stupor that rubs shoulders with a state of grace, where everyone finds their place.

A shared experience of swirling waves, feedback, crystalline sounds, distortion, reverb… Music to blow your mind!

Jean-Bernard Lepape: It's a group that functions like a collective. Each concert so far has been performed with a different line up of people. It's great to feel the shared pleasure of coming together around an unusual sound.

How would you define the Cool Feedback musically?

GG: The simplest way would be to say “Free-Form Music”, it's not really free-jazz or ambient or experimental music.

JBL: It's a unique blend of jazz and rock, but it's not just that, nor is it jazz-rock, it's also free music, which is why it's so interesting.

As Grégoire says, Free-Form Music is great because in this music there's freedom, there's Free.

You've just released a new album, Free Spirit. Where and with whom was it recorded?

GG: It was recorded in Paris with the musicians mentioned above, except for Vincent Chavagnac who only played live.

How do you record: do the horns rehearse together, and guitars too?

GG: For this album 3 tracks were written with the drummers, Gilbert and Jean-Bernard, for the other musicians I prepared the basics which the musicians listened to on their own, then during the recording they knew in which direction to go. The rehearsals only take place before the concerts.

How would you describe this new album?

GG: It's a continuity of the previous album, with the addition of new instruments (Dan Bao, mandolin, MS20). Gilbert Artman plays drums this time and Jérôme Pons is taking part for the first time.

How do you go about composing?

GG: I always start by finding chords on piano, then I think about the instruments that will be there. Tempo and key are also important, and must be taken into account for certain instruments. I then record demos that gradually turn into songs.

The Cool Feedback could be compared to certain types of jazz music. Does improvisation play a big role in this?

GG: Yes, the fact of improvising is what brings the group closest to jazz. And to do that you need musical support, which is provided by feedback from the guitars and enhanced by the drums.

JBL: Yes, of course, improvisation plays a big part, it has its place, it contributes to the construction of the tracks.

It's a music that we're trying to build and that's influenced by so much other musical forms, the members of the group know a lot of things, that's why they manage to find themes, colours and improvise together and that's what makes it a whole.

PM: Improvisation is fundamental to this project. It's essential and it offers a great deal of freedom that you find in free jazz, but with a more classical aesthetic in the solos.

How does this work out on stage?

GG: The music is written down and allows the soloists to improvise, but each of them makes it evolve as they see it. I indicate the changes of theme, I act a bit as conductor and with Jean-Bernard we mainly wave to each other and all the musicians listen to what the others are doing, and we have to know how to stop at the right moment together!

PM: For me it was a great pleasure to play on stage with the group. The total openness allows you to explore infinite possibilities of improvisation.

JBL: On stage it's all about listening, it's all about magic. There's no recipe for it, that's why I use the word magic, the band's sound really takes shape, there's really a sound that's there, and it plays, and it plays, and it plays!

It's amazing to get together with people like Jean-Bernard who's a magnificent drummer. Everyone is tuned in to what's going on.

What are your plans for the future?

JBL: To find a tour manager and a circuit to do more concerts.

GG: Yes, that's what we miss the most. Making records is great but live shows are irreplaceable and we miss them.

Voici une des aventures musicales les plus singulières et des plus créatives de la scène musicale : le Cool Feedback ! Formé autour du guitariste Grégoire Garrigues, secondé par des musiciens incroyables comme Robert Lloyd, Gilbert Artman, Jac Berrocal ou Laurent Lanouzière, ce collectif inédit joue une musique très difficilement définissable, qui emprunte autant rock qu'au jazz avec une large part à l'improvisation. Une nouvelle manière d'envisager la musique mais aussi de toucher à notre âme. Le groupe a d'ailleurs appelé ses albums « Soul Overdrive », « Dash my Mind » ou « Free Spirit » pour le dernier. Une trilogie d'albums qui bénéficient des photos de pochette de Rico Parois, que l'on peut considérer comme un membre du collectif et qui ont pour thème l'architecture moderne !

C'est ça le collectif le Cool Feedback : un groupe qui a su se construire autour d'un axe central mais qui sait déborder musicalement pour mieux vous parler. Il suffit juste de voir un concert du groupe pour s'en rendre compte ! Voici donc une rencontre avec un groupe qui a su se trouver en n'acceptant aucun dictat, aucune chapelle… Juste un collectif de musiciens libres !

Alors que le groupe / collectif vient de sortir son troisième album « Free Spirit », certains des musiciens ont répondu à quelques questions pour en savoir plus !

Comment et quand est né le groupe ?

Grégoire Garrigues : Avant même de penser à un groupe, nous étions avec Robert Lloyd et Sonny Sharrock en 1993 dans le studio de Bill Laswell à New-York pour enregistrer un album et nous avons improvisé une pièce de 10mn de feedback en vu de l'intégrer à un morceau. Le résultat était tellement beau que c'est devenu un morceau à par entière qui a été baptisé « Tribute to Sun Ra ».

Le groupe a pris forme un peu par hasard en 1997 lors de l'enregistrement de titres qui sortiront 9 ans plus tard. J'avais commencé à enregistrer tout seul des parties de guitare et basse en feedback puis J'ai demandé à Iann Assuied de jouer de la batterie sur 2 titres, à Michel Guikovaty de composer des parties de piano pour un autre et Robert Lloyd est venu jouer sur « Catalyst on the List », résultat : The Cool Feedback Quartet naissait et un album « Dash My Mind » sortait en 2016 grâce à Thierry Los/3 Jeunes Tambours.

Qu'avez-vous fait depuis cette date ?

GG : De trop rares concerts, un album live et 2 autres albums studio, donc 4 albums ce qui n'est pas rien !

Comment caractériser la technique du Feedback ?

GG : Le feedback est assez simple à expliquer : prenons une guitare électrique, le son de l'instrument sort d'un ampli, ce son est repris par le micro de l'instrument et cela constitue une boucle sonore qui peut durer autant de temps que l'on veut.

Et pourquoi le feedback ?

Robert Lloyd : J'ai toujours été envouté et amoureux de la musique Pibroch des Highlands d'Ecosse (longues improvisations de cornemuse solo, très proche des ragas indiens). D'une façon ou d'une autre je voyais qu'il fallait que je m'introduise dans « cet univers la ». J'aimais beaucoup les expérimentations qui seraient qualifiées de « bruitiste »de nos jours de Pete Townshend, à sa grande période inspirée, mais ce ne fut qu'en voyant Jeff Beck, armé d'une Telecaster et d'un ampli vox AC30 en juin 65, plongé dans le feedback, que la révélation, comme Claudel à Notre-Dame, me submergea, JE SUIS CELA ET TELLE EST MA VOIE ! C'est comme si la fée Viviane et Merlin l'enchanteur me prenaient par la main et me disaient :« we're with you, you are one of us, go for it , thIs is your duty ».

GG : Le feedback est vraiment unique, c'est un peu le souffle continu appliqué à la guitare. Contrairement à ce que l'on pourrait penser, il n'est pas nécessaire de jouer fort pour avoir du feedback, mais quand il y a du volume, là c'est un plaisir unique, sentir tout vibrer, l'air, les amplis, le corps, tout ce qu'il y a autour, ca devient complètement fou ! Il suffit de voir Jimi Hendrix en action par exemple.

Qui compose le groupe aujourd'hui ?

GG : Depuis le premier concert en juin 2018 il y a Robert Lloyd-guitare, Jean-Bernard Lepape-batterie, Gilbert Artman-clarinette basse et batterie, Jac Berrocal-trompette, Morgan Lanoë-basse et au fil des autres concerts Laurent Lanouzière-basse, José Ortuno-guitare, Tullia Morand-saxophone, Pierre Mimran-saxophone, Didier Léglise-synthetiseur et Vincent Chavagnac-saxophone. Sur le nouvel album il y a Jérôme Pons-piano mais il n'a pas encore joué sur scène avec nous.

Grégoire, je sais que Laurent et Jean-Bernard jouent du rock depuis longtemps avec toi mais Tullia, Pierre et Jac qui venez d'autres univers musicaux, comment vous êtes-vous retrouvés à jouer dans ce groupe ?

Tillia Moran et Pierre Mimran : Grégoire est avant tout un ami. Il a une ouverture d'esprit par rapport à son style de musique, il vient du rock et il est curieux de découvrir et d'intégrer d'autres univers musicaux. Il nous a proposé de participer à l'enregistrement des 2 albums du Cool Feedback et cela nous a séduit. Ça a été une super expérience pour nous aussi bien humainement que musicalement !

Gilbert Artman : Depuis bien longtemps nous nous connaissons avec Robert, nous fréquentions les mêmes lieux et concerts. De temps en temps, nous nous retrouvions en fin de soirée chez les Lloyd où l'accueil était très chaleureux, et la discothèque remplie de petits bijoux et pour moi de découvertes. On y rencontrait des personnes et musiciens passionnants, c'était un lieu où se préparaient, avec Philippe Bone et Gilles Yéprémian, des actions et concerts avec des groupes comme : Half Human Band, Ricky Darling etc…

C'est sans doute lors d'une de ces réunions préparatoires du festival « Noisysson-Sec » que s'est révélé autour de Patrick Eudeline la première mouture du légendaire Asphalt Jungle, que Grégoire Garrigues rejoindra plus tard.

Et c'est en toute logique - après avoir réalisé le très beau disque de Robert Lloyd – qu'entouré de groovers bruitistes implacables, la palette s'augmentant d'une paire de saxophonistes amenant d'autres couleurs et donnant un autre espace, j'ai rejoint le groupe à leur invitation.

Merci à eux d'avoir bien voulu nous accueillir avec Jac ponctuellement dans cette aventure, et égrener notre éternel bien-être contrarié.

Jac Berrocal : On s'est retrouvé à jouer parce qu'on se connaît tous les 4 avec Gilbert et Robert, mais on ne vient pas tellement d'univers différents, j'écoute de la musique du moyen âge au métal le plus dur !

Et Grégoire a plein d'expériences presque communes avec moi notamment à travers Vince Taylor et Bobbie Clarke, on s'est réuni et ça a fusionné.

Est-ce un groupe ou un collectif ?

Laurent Lanouzière : Le CF est un collectif et un groupe à géométrie variable où chacun amène sa sensibilité, sa pierre à l'édifice, nous sculptons en concerts cette même pierre comme on pourrait tailler les facettes d'une pierre précieuse afin de la rendre étincelante, calibrée, unique. D'aller en chercher l'essence.

Tout réside dans les nuances, les moments suspendus, l'écoute, le positionnement, le silence et le bruit, la stupeur qui côtoie l'état de grâce et où chacun trouverait sa place.

Une expérience de partage de tourbillons d'ondes, de Feedbacks, de sons cristallins, de distorsions, de reverb… Music to blow your mind !

Jean-Bernard Lepape : C'est un groupe qui fonctionne comme un collectif. Chaque concert, jusqu'à présent, s'est déroulé avec une configuration différente de musiciens. Il est réjouissant de sentir le plaisir partagé de se réunir autour d'une matière sonore peu banale.

Comment caractériser le Cool Feedback musicalement ?

GG : Le plus simple serait de dire « Free-Form Music », ce n'est pas vraiment du Free-jazz ni de l'ambient ou de la musique expérimentale.

JBL : Mélange de Jazz, de rock mais ce n'est pas que ça, ni du Jazz-Rock, c'est du Free aussi, c'est pour ça que c'est très intéressant.

Comme le dit Grégoire Free-Form Music c'est très bien car dans cette musique il y a la liberté, il y a le Free.

Vous sortez un nouvel album « Free Spirit », il a été enregistré où et avec qui ?

GG : Il a été enregistré à Paris avec les musiciens cités plus haut sauf Vincent Chavagnac qui n'a joué qu'en concert.

Comment faites-vous pour enregistrer : est-ce que les cuivres répètent ensemble, les guitares aussi ?

GG : Pour cet album 3 morceaux ont été écrits avec les batteurs, Gilbert et Jean-Bernard, pour les autres musiciens j'ai préparé les bases que les musiciens ont écouté de leur côté puis lors de l'enregistrement ils savaient dans quel direction aller. Les répétitions n'ont lieu qu'avant les concerts.

Comment décririez-vous ce nouveau disque ?

GG : Il est dans la continuité du précédent, en y intégrant de nouveaux instruments (Dan Bao, mandoline, MS20) Gilbert Artman y joue cette fois de la batterie et Jérôme Pons y participe pour la première fois.

Comment se fait la composition ?

GG : Je commence toujours par trouver des accords au piano, puis je pense aux instruments qui vont y être intégrés, le tempo et la tonalité sont importants aussi, il faut en tenir compte pour certains instruments. J'enregistre ensuite des maquettes qui se transforment au fur et à mesure en morceaux.

On pourrait rapprocher le Cool Feedback de certaines musiques de jazz, est ce que l'improvisation joue un grand rôle ?

GG : Oui, le fait d'improviser est ce qui rapproche le plus le groupe du Jazz. Et pour cela il faut un support musical qui est fournit par les guitares en feedback et soutenu par la batterie.

JBL : Oui bien sûr, l'improvisation joue un grand rôle, elle a sa place, elle participe à la construction des morceaux.

C'est une musique que nous essayons de construire et qui est influencée par tellement d'autres musiques, les membres du groupe connaissent beaucoup de choses, c'est pour ça qu'ils arrivent à trouver des thèmes, des couleurs et à improviser ensemble et que ça fait un tout

PM : L'improvisation est fondamentale dans ce projet. Elle est essentielle et elle offre une très grande liberté que l'on retrouve dans le Free-jazz mais avec une esthétique plus classique dans les solos.

Comment cela se passe-t-il sur scène ?

GG : Le support musical est écrit et permet aux solistes d'improviser mais chacun le fait évoluer comme il le sent, moi j'indique les changements de thème, je fais un peu office de chef d'orchestre et avec Jean-Bernard principalement nous nous faisons des signes et tous les musiciens sont à l'écoute de ce que font les autres car il faut savoir s'arrêter au bon moment tous ensemble !

PM : Pour moi ce fut un grand plaisir de jouer sur scène avec le groupe. L'ouverture totale permet d'explorer des possibilités d'improvisation infinies.

JBL : Sur scène c'est l'écoute, c'est la magie. Quand on s'entend bien sur scène, quand la circulation du son dans le groupe se passe bien là c'est une magie, on le sent, il n'y a pas de recette à ça, c'est pour ça que j'emploie le mot magie, le son du groupe prend vraiment corps, il y a vraiment un son qui est là, et ça joue, et ça joue, et ça joue !

C'est étonnant de se réunir avec des gens comme Jean-Bernard qui est un magnifique batteur, tout le monde est à l'écoute des choses.

Quels sont vos projets ?

JBL : Trouver le tourneur et le circuit pour faire davantage de concerts.

GG : Oui c'est effectivement ce qui nous manque le plus, sortir des disques c'est bien mais le live est irremplaçable et cela nous manque.
